What type of policies provide automatic extension of coverage?

Last Updated:

Short Answer:

Typically, Trip Cancellation policies include automatic extension of coverage if a trip is extended for one of the policy’s covered reasons.

More Detail:

Extension of coverage can be included in Trip Cancellation policies, usually due to unavoidable circumstances beyond the traveler’s control. Most policies will extend for up to 7 days after your scheduled return date.

International Medical policies commonly don’t include this type of coverage, however they are often renewable.

The details for this type of coverage will be provided in the policies certificate.

If you extend your trip unexpectedly, not for a covered reason, travel insurance does not provide coverage. However,  you can typically purchase an International Medical policy while traveling to provide Emergency Medical and Medical Evacuation benefits during the rest of your trip.

This information can vary based on the travel insurance policy. Please review the policy certificate to verify coverage.
