If my family member has a Pre-Existing Medical Condition, am I covered to cancel my trip?
Some policies provide coverage if you need to cancel your trip due to a family member's Pre- Existing Medical Condition. Depending on the policy, you may require Pre-Existing Condition coverage.
Some plans define a Pre-Existing Condition as any medical condition that you or a traveling companion has received treatment, medical advice, or diagnosis for with within the look-back period on the policy. Other plans include non-traveling family members in this description. This means, some plans will only look into you and your traveling companion’s medical history, while others also look into the medical history of your non-traveling family members, in order to determine if a condition is pre-existing.
If your policy’s definition of a “Pre-Existing Condition” does look into the medical history of non-traveling family members, you must have Pre-Existing Condition coverage in order to be covered to cancel for an unforeseen worsening or recurrence of a family member’s Pre-Existing Condition.
In all cases, your family member must be considered stable at the time the policy is purchased. If the family member has received a prognosis of death or is currently in hospice care, please verify within the policy certificate to see if there are any specific exclusions related to this, as some policies will not provide coverage.
